The Curaçaosch Museum: A Historic Gem

Housed in a Historic Landmark

The Curaçaosch Museum is set in a stunning architectural monument that dates back to 1853. Originally a military hospital where soldiers afflicted with yellow fever were treated, the building was transformed into a museum thanks to the efforts of Dr. Chris J.H. Engels, his father-in-law Rudolf F.W. Boskaljon, and the initial board of directors.

A Community Effort

The museum officially opened its doors on March 7, 1948, following a successful fundraising campaign by the Curaçao community, which raised 80,000 guilders for its inventory. This communal effort underscores the museum’s deep roots in the local culture and its importance to the people of Curaçao.

Exhibits and Collections

Art from Renowned Artists

The museum’s collection features exquisite artworks from renowned artists such as Jan Sluijters, Carel Willink, Dolf Henkens, and Foujita. These pieces are displayed alongside antique iron money chests, household artifacts, and furniture crafted by local artisans, showcasing the island’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.

Historic and Unique Artifacts

The Curaçaosch Museum is home to an array of unique items, including:

  • Curaçaosch Furniture: Beautiful pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries made by local carpenters.
  • Traditional Kitchen: A glimpse into the traditional Curaçaoan kitchen.
  • The Carillon: Installed in 1951, “The Four King’s Children” is the only carillon in the entire Caribbean.
  • Stained Glass Map: Created by Willem Bogtman for the 1939 World Expo in New York, this piece is a highlight in the West Indies Room.
  • Historic Train: The original train from the Curaçao Mining Company at Tafelberg.
  • KLM ‘SNIP’ Cockpit: The restored cockpit and engine of the first KLM airplane to land in Curaçao on December 22, 1934, after departing from Amsterdam.

Sculpture Garden and Botanical Beauty

In the Sculpture Garden, you will find remarkable statues of past freedom fighters like Luis Brion and Manuel Piar, as well as modern artworks by artists such as Yubi Kirindongo, Hortence Brouwn, and Philippe Zanolino. The adjacent Botanical Garden features rare trees, offering a serene escape and a chance to appreciate Curaçao’s natural beauty.

The Children’s Historical and Cultural Village

The museum also features a dedicated historical-cultural village for children. This safe and engaging area allows young visitors to explore and learn about Curaçao’s history and culture through interactive exhibits and activities.

Small but interesting items never seen at other island museums.
A lovely museum with some interesting artifacts What I particularly loved was the seamless integration of modern art alongside the historical pieces. It added a unique and refreshing dimension to the museum experience.
The tour was kind of interesting but the building was deteriorating really bad
It's the only museum on the island with a permanent modern art collection and exciting bi-monthly contemporary art exhibitions.
And worthy to mention during the openings always premium wine and the famous "kaasbal".
This museum is in need of serious renovation. There were areas where the water had leaked in and was even filling an exhibit in the kitchen. We were disappointed that although it had some interesting exhibits it fails to be in my opinion a serious museum for the island. Run down and needing serious capital injection. I cannot recommend this for a visit.
I don't think I have ever given a place one star before, but for the half-hour walk each way, and the$10 entry fee, I believe in warm weather, I would not have gone had I known it wasn't much information. You are basically given and eight and a half by 11 laminated sheet of paper printed on both sides of the different rooms inside the house. Other than that, not much history or anything. I would not recommend this as a stop it was way out of the way. We got way more information from our 4 Hour Island Tour by Irie.
