Diving in Curaçao is not just about exploring the underwater beauty; it’s also about making a meaningful impact on the environment. The PADI Reef Renewal Diver Distinctive Specialty Course offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the restoration of Curaçao’s coral reefs. This course, perfect for families, solo divers, vacationers, and school groups, combines education with hands-on experience in coral gardening and reef restoration.

Course Highlights

Interactive Learning and Hands-On Practice

During the course, participants will engage in interactive, on-land lessons and hands-on skills practice. These sessions are designed to inspire and educate divers about the importance of coral reefs and the techniques used in their restoration.

Two Training Dives

The course includes two training dives, where divers will maintain coral nurseries, hone their buoyancy skills, propagate new corals, and outplant them back into the reef. This experience allows divers to leave a lasting, living mark on Curaçao’s shallow water reef system.

Become a Certified Reef Renewal Curaçao Volunteer

Upon completing the course, participants will become certified Reef Renewal Curaçao volunteers. This certification opens the door to join volunteer dives throughout the year, ensuring ongoing contributions to reef restoration efforts whenever you return to Curaçao.

What’s Included in the Course?

  • Full Set of Rental Equipment: All necessary diving gear is provided.
  • Theory Session: Flexible instruction training is included to prepare participants for the dives.
  • Certification: Receive official certification as a Reef Renewal Curaçao volunteer.

Sustainable Tourism in Action

At Ocean Encounters, sustainability is a core value. The Curaçao Reef Restoration Program is a testament to our commitment to protecting the local waters, marine life, and community. Our #OEPledge initiative showcases the various ways we contribute to environmental conservation, from educating the public to implementing eco-friendly practices.

Why Coral Restoration Matters

Coral reefs are vital to the ecosystem of Curaçao, providing coastal protection, food, and revenue from tourism. However, they are threatened by human impacts. Reef restoration is crucial to preserving these ecosystems. Reef Renewal Curaçao envisions a future where the shallow water reef systems are no longer threatened, and ocean stewardship becomes an integral part of Curaçao’s culture.

I feel like I’m the worst kind of client. This was my very first dive in the ocean, other than my certification… in a lake, I had 1 dive under me… in a lake. I was terrified. The first 5 dives were good, we saw pretty things, however, I was so freaked out, I just was not enjoying myself. I didn’t go for a second dive one day and instead, hung out on the boat with Louis. He spent the whole time giving me perspective, advice, and assurance. I appreciated that. He didn’t have to even acknowledge my existence. After that my dive master from my shop (had been my diving buddy, he was amazing, literally held my hand while I fell apart under water) wanted to have some fun so I was with Meghan that day. She made everything so fun and exciting. She showed me all of the cute, tiny things in the coral, the big cool things I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise, and made awesome underwater jokes, while 60 ft down. I am so incredibly grateful for Louis and Meghan, they turned my trip around and i genuinely fell in love with diving. I’m terrible at it still, I have bad form and I breathe too much, but Dangit I can’t wait to do it again and start getting better❤️❤️ THANK YOU MEGHAN AND LOUIS🫶🏼
We had a great time here at Ocean Encounters. All the staff - from front desk to guides on the boat were helpful, friendly, encouraging, and awesome to be around. Shout out to Jeff for being knowledgeable and down to earth; great guide. We would definitely do again so long as my stomach cooperates!
Best experience! Love this dive shop. All the employees are knowledgeable, kind, friendly, and very professional. Their gear is high quality. My husband and I enjoyed all our dives with this team and left feeling like part of the family. Strongly recommend!
Very nice and friendly dive center! Everyone is enjoying what they do with great enthusiasm and a smile on their faces! Really taking the time to educate you about the reef and its inhabitants. You can do shore dives on the beautiful house reef that is very good accessible and very easy to navigate. They also offer a variety of boat dives on stunning reefs (2 every morning) and they have a dolphin, a night dive and a hunting dive (lionfish) as special dives! Oh and did i tell you that there is a 20-40 metere (100ft +) underwater sight!!!

Special thanks to everyone and i will definitely be coming back!
Great dive-shop albeit probably one of the most busy ones on Curaçao. Solid equipment, nice team and located just perfectly for boat diving east of Mambo.
What a great day we had diving with Ocean Encounters! Our party of five (including three divers and two snorkelers) visited Curacao during a Carnival cruise on April 9, 2024. Arranging transportation was super easy, and we were never concerned that we wouldn't make it back to the port.

Once we arrived, we rented our gear (owner, Jeremiah, was fantastic) and set out for a nice, easy self-guided shore dive on their house reef. Before the dive, I unknowingly let my regulator drag across the sand, which caused it fill with water while trying to breath beneath the surface. YIKES! After I returned to shore, a member of their knowledgeable and friendly staff quickly recognized the problem (a tiny pebble was stuck in my reg!), disassembled it and reassembled it for me right there in the water. Problem solved!

After the shore dive, we had a not-so-good snack at the adjacent Lionsdive Resort bar/restaurant (bitter balls are NASTY) before heading out for a single-tank boat dive. We were impressed with Ocean Encounters and highly recommend diving with them if you're going to be in Curacao!
An excellent choice for your scuba diving in Curacao. Excellent in the booking/ serving procedures for our group, excellent in safety, excellent in gear quality, excellent in boats. Very well done guys. Keep it up
