The Story Behind the Superior Producer

A Voyage Cut Short

The Superior Producer was a small freighter destined for Isla Margarita in Venezuela. Laden with alcohol and clothes for the upcoming Christmas season, it set sail in September 1977. However, rough seas and an overloaded cargo led to disaster. The heavy cargo shifted, causing the ship to quickly sink just outside the harbor of Willemstad.

A Treasure for the Islanders

What could have been a maritime tragedy turned into an unexpected boon for the islanders. As the Superior Producer sank, its valuable cargo was within reach of those on shore. Islanders salvaged the clothes and alcohol, turning an unfortunate event into a period of unexpected prosperity. The jeans, shirts, and spirits recovered from the wreck became part of the local folklore, remembered and cherished by many.

An Underwater Time Capsule

Today, the Superior Producer rests on an even keel at a depth of about 30 meters (100 feet), making it accessible to advanced divers. The ship is remarkably well-preserved, offering divers a chance to explore its decks, cargo holds, and the remnants of its cargo. The wreck is teeming with marine life, including schools of colorful fish, coral formations, and occasional visits from larger sea creatures.

Great place to visit if you want to do a shore dive and it’s great if your friends just want to be lazy at the beach or go snorkeling while you dive. I’ve been using this place for over 10 years. It’s convenient if you want to go here from a cruise ship too as it’s only 15-18 minutes from the port (use 24-7 taxi app). Our guide/dive master, Tristen, was awesome. Very meticulous and safety oriented. Ask in advance to go on a lion fish hunt dive as we saw a few of those invasive species on our dives. You will see all the fish, eels, flounders, shrimp, and we even saw a huge tarpon.
Most professional staff on Curaçao. Amazing reefs right outside bay, but even inside the bay is very nice. Saw a 1meter green moray eel in the bay yesterday. Reasonable pricing. Owner Mick is very active and visible.
This week, a large group of friends (wedding guests) and I went diving at Blue Bay. From the resort, it's mandatory to obtain diving tanks from Blue Bay Dive & Water. As experienced divers, we unfortunately found that none of our group's diving tanks had been inspected. Furthermore, they were all set up without caps (an indication of emptiness). The staff member at the counter seemed to have little knowledge of diving equipment; o-rings were missing or damaged, and up to four times, the tanks turned out to be defective. How can this happen? There can only be one review: avoid this diving spot altogether! It's dangerous and a disgrace to the diving community. Here, a major player like Blue Bay is playing with lives! We are going to report this to the authorities.
Great dive shop. My son and I did scuba discovery dive here, and we both enjoyed it. Can get crowded when they bring large tour groups here. We we advised not to book morning dive because of that. We ended up having a private dive with my son at 3pm. Our instructor was super nice and helpful. We spent more time in the water than promised because there were no other groups after us. Also, in the early afternoon, the sun lights up the drop off a lot more comparing to the morning sun. I found prices to be very reasonable as well.
The staff was super nice and flexible when I told them I what I wanted for our family of four. The equipment is top notch and the sites (shore diving) are beautiful. We even tried lion fish hunting (invasive species) and that was a blast 🤿🙂
It took me three years to write this review. I’ve been wanting to write it for a long time but kept forgetting to do it. My family and I stayed at Blue Bay three years ago. On the last day of the trip, my 11 year old accidentally touched a scorpion fish and was stung by its poisonous stingers. Before we left for the trip, I briefed my children on the dangerous creatures they may encounter in the ocean so my son knew exactly what he was stung by. Not knowing what to do, I picked up my 11 year old son and rushed over to the dive shop. There, one of the dive shop workers named Cornelius and his colleagues knew exactly what to do. They treated my son quickly and instructed us on what to expect from the sting of the venomous fish for the next 24 hours. Following his advice, we did everything he recommended and treated my son and closely monitored him for the next day. Even though the following 12-15 hours were scary and extremely difficult for my son and my family, Cornelius’ expert advise helped alleviate some of the discomfort my son went through. His guidance also helped us understand what to expect and what danger signs to look for that would indicate his condition was deteriorating and we should seek professional medical attention. Luckily we didn’t need to do that. Needless to say, seeking the advise of the staff at the dive shop was the best decision I made and it helped my son tremendously. He recovered completely and is doing great. When you take your family to snorkel or swim
In tropical waters, please keep in mind that you are entering a wild environment. Prepare and educate yourself on potential dangers and educate your family also. It can save their life. Thanks to the Blue Bay Dive Shop, this story has a happy ending.
