What Makes Marlin Fishing Special?

The Pinnacle of Offshore Game Fishing

Marlin fishing is often considered the pinnacle of offshore game fishing due to the size and power of these magnificent creatures. In Curaçao, blue marlins, averaging around 200 lbs, are the primary target. The thrill of battling such a formidable fish is unmatched, requiring both skill and patience. Historically, capturing marlin was a feat that demanded exceptional ability, and even today, it remains a prized challenge for anglers.

The Gear and Techniques

Fishing Gear

In Curaçao, the most commonly used gear includes 50lbs class reels and 50/80 lbs rods. These setups are robust enough to handle the strength and speed of blue marlins. The choice of gear and technique can significantly influence your success rate.

Artificial Lures

One of the most popular methods for marlin fishing is using artificial lures. These lures mimic the movement and appearance of prey, attracting marlins with their splash, bubble trail, and vibrant colors. Originating from Hawaii, this technique has gained global popularity. Modern lures come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, crafted by both large manufacturers and custom makers.

A typical marlin lure features a shaped plastic or metal head with a plastic skirt attached. The design of the lure head, especially its face, determines its action in the water. Lures can swim side-to-side, push water aggressively on the surface, or track in a straight line with a bubble trail. Anglers can fine-tune these lures to achieve the desired action, adapting to different sea conditions.

Lures are usually trolled at speeds of 7.5 to 9 knots, allowing substantial areas to be covered in a day’s fishing. Typically, four or more lures are trolled behind the boat at varying distances, either directly from the rod tip (“flat lines”) or from outriggers.

Natural Baits

Rigged natural baits have been used since the 1930s and remain popular among sport fishermen. In Curaçao, flying fish and ballyhoo are commonly used. These baits can be combined with artificial lures to create “skirted baits” or “bait/lure combinations,” enhancing their attractiveness to marlins.

Live Bait

Live bait fishing, using small tuna species like skipjack, is another effective method. This technique is usually employed near Fish Aggregation Device (FAD) buoys and steep underwater ledges, where marlins are likely to hunt. Since live baits need to be trolled slowly to remain alive, this method is best suited for smaller fishing areas.

Niels and Nestor were great guides on our first ocean fishing trip. We weren't the easiest guests. Late to start, beginners, some of us were seasick, etc. But they were accommodating to us in every way imaginable. We even had some great Mahi Mahi for lunch that we caught and brought back to our place! A great first time ocean fishing experience!
This was a great charter he kept me on the fish we found 2 schools of mahi and tuna. They were very professional from the start when i first was looking for a charter. They fish alot so they know where to go. I highly recommend.
If you are in Curacao and want to go deep sea fishing, I totally recommend Bar Four. Neils and his crew were amazing!
We did a 6hr private tour and caught 9 barracuda, 8 Mahi Mahi, and a 400 lb Blue Marlin. Since we caught a blue Marlin we got to fly the Blue Marlin flag 😃
What an amazing day for all of us.
Highly recommend!
Thank you Neils for an amazing day!
The boat trip was extraordinary. We did it in private. Captain Niels and Nestor the fishing specialist were super friendly and above all competent. (don't forget to ask them for the delicious sandwich with honey mustard sauce :-)
We took a six-hour tour passing through little Curacao with its splendid beach. We can highly recommend this tour.
A very big thank goes also to Annelies for her perfect organization. Once again thank you and see you next time

Niels and Nestor ran the fishing charter professionally and certainly met our expectations. A stop at Kleine Curacao was a beautiful break and to have some lunch. Two beautiful fish and bragging rights for a good fight with a sailfish and wahoo will add to our other fishing stories. The sailfish was really that big. The communication through Annalies also made the experience go smoothly, we look forward to our next fishing adventure.
Capt Gordo & Kolonel were the best! Highly recommend! Kolonel was amazingly fast with re-rigging lines, especially once we were over a spot where the fish were hitting. What a way to turn 50! And we brought some freshly filleted Mahi Mahi back to cook for dinner!
Highly recommend a fishing trip with Fish Curacao! Captain and crew make it a heck of an experience.

Snacks/drinks are provided. They do all the work with the bait/rods, but will answer any questions you have.

Fishing can be unpredictable, but we were lucky enough to catch 7 wahoo, 4 tuna and 1 barracuda in a 4 hour trip!
I went out fishing with Bar Four II several times November 2023. Captain Niels and deck hand Nestor, was one of the best crews I ever had after fishing around the world for over 35 years!
I caught 4 different species of tuna, barracuda, wahoo and a sailfish.
Boat and equipment was top notch.
And Captain Niels also told me he had ordered a new game chair with all the bells and whistles, including drink holders👍 I can highly recommend this outfit!
